In case that you’re thinking about upgrading your home’s windows, energy efficiency should be at the top of your list of considerations. The correct window purchase for your home makes all the difference in the world in terms of comfort and energy savings especially when you live in a cold climate like ours here in Canada.

Energy Star Windows Will Save You Money Read Why

In case that you’re thinking about upgrading your home’s windows, energy efficiency should be at the top of your list of considerations. The correct window purchase for your home makes all the difference in the world in terms of comfort and energy savings especially when you live in a cold climate like ours here in Canada.

You’re most likely familiar with the Energy Star label used to highlight energy efficacy in household appliances. But did you know the Energy Star rating is applied to architectural features as well? Windows, skylights, and doors can also qualify for the esteemed Energy Star designation.

If you narrow your search margin to window models to those with the Energy Star label, you’ll be thankful you did. Not only will your decision have a positive impact on the environment, you’ll notice the positive impact on your finances as well. The average homeowner experiences a 7 – 10% reduction on their utility bills.

WHAT MAKES ENERGY STAR WINDOWS DIFFERENT?

Have you ever stood by a window and felt the difference between the exterior and interior air temperature? When you are standing inside your house and place your hand on the window glass, does it feel cold on a winter day and warm on a summer day? These are the signs of poorly insulated windows that are outdated, cheaply made, or both. Energy Star windows will feel neutral to the touch, even in harsh weather environments.

Before you begin selecting your windows, you want to have an understanding of what makes Energy Star windows efficient. Windows are rated in several areas:

U-Factor (or U-Value) – this is a measurement of the amount of heat a window allows to be transmitted through it. It omits any heat related to solar energy. The rating is based on a 0°C day, interior temperature of 21° C, 15 mph winds, and no solar factor. The lower the U-factor the better insulated the window is.

SHGC rating – Solar Heat Gain Coefficient – this is a measurement of the amount of direct solar radiation that enters through a window and the amount of radiation transmitted through absorption. The lower the number the better in terms of solar heat gain.

Airtightness Rating (or air leakage rating) – this measures the amount of air that can penetrate the windows perimeter due to air pressure changes. The lower the rating, the greater its airtightness.

ER Value – Energy Rating – this is rating based on a formula using the above U-Factor, SHGC, and Airtightness ratings. Unlike the previous three values, higher ratings are better.

There are other factors windows are rated for such as resistance to forced entry, windload strength, watertightness, insect screen strength, and ease of operation. However, Energy Star windows are rated for the three areas we have highlighted here.

ENERGY STAR CLIMATE ZONE:

When you begin to make your window selection, you will want to be aware of your climate zone. Before you go out and buy windows with the highest Energy Rating possible, make sure you are buying the appropriate window for your geographic location. Canada is divided into four climate zones: A, B, C & D. If you are from the KW are or even Toronto, you want to buy windows rated for Climate Zone B, as opposed to Winnipeg, where you would be in Zone C.

Energy Star windows’ sophisticated designs ensure that your home maintains its attractive appearance while providing top-of-the line solar protection and insulation technologies.

With this information you are armed and ready to buy the windows best suited to your home’s needs. Just look for the Blue Star.
